SEO work done outside your own website — primarily building backlinks, brand mentions, and authority signals that tell search engines your site is trustworthy and credible.

Definition

Off-page SEO encompasses all ranking signals that originate outside your website: inbound backlinks from other domains (the most powerful off-page signal), unlinked brand mentions, social media signals, and engagement metrics. Backlinks are effectively votes of confidence — a link from a high-authority, topically relevant site passes more PageRank than a link from an unrelated or low-authority site. Google's original PageRank algorithm was built on the premise that links represent editorial endorsements. Off-page SEO is distinct from on-page SEO (your content, titles, structured data) and technical SEO (crawlability, performance, architecture) — though all three interact.

Why it matters for SEO

For competitive queries, on-page and technical SEO are table stakes — every competing page has good content and clean infrastructure. Off-page signals (specifically backlinks from authoritative, relevant domains) are often what separates page 1 from page 2 results.
