SEO Experiment
A controlled test of an SEO change (title tag rewrite, structured data addition, internal linking change, content update) on a subset of pages or search queries, with measurement against a control group — the only reliable method for distinguishing the causal impact of an SEO change from organic search volatility and algorithm updates.
Definition
An SEO experiment is a structured test of an SEO hypothesis: a predicted change to organic search performance from a specific modification to on-page, technical, or content factors. Unlike A/B testing for conversion rate optimisation (where different users see different versions simultaneously), SEO experiments operate in search engines\' domain — which introduces specific challenges: search ranking changes are not instantly reflected, algorithm updates can confound results, and Googlebot may crawl the tested pages at different intervals. Types of SEO experiments: (1) **Time-based (before/after) tests**: a change is made to a page or group of pages, and performance (impressions, clicks, average position from GSC) is compared before and after the change. Simple but confounded by seasonality, algorithm updates, and general ranking volatility. (2) **Split tests (experimental vs control groups)**: a set of similar pages is split into a treated group (change applied) and a control group (no change). Performance divergence between the groups after the change suggests causal impact, controlling for external factors that affect both groups equally. Search Pilot, SEO Testing tools, and Google\'s Search Console Experiments feature support this methodology. (3) **Sequential experiments**: changes are applied iteratively on a defined schedule, with time allowed for Google to recrawl and reindex between iterations. What makes a valid SEO experiment: (1) Sufficient page volume in the test group (typically ≥100 pages for statistical significance). (2) Sufficient pre-change baseline period (at least 4 weeks). (3) Comparable control group (similar pages in terms of authority, topic, existing performance). (4) Isolation of the change (only one variable changed at a time per experiment). (5) Post-change measurement period sufficient for Googlebot to recrawl and reindex (allow 4-8 weeks after change). Common SEO experiment topics: title tag formula changes, H1 rewrites, structured data addition, internal linking pattern changes, content length changes, FAQ section additions, and schema markup type changes.
Why it matters for SEO
SEO is rife with correlation-based myths — tactics believed to work because traffic happened to improve after implementation, when the causal mechanism is unclear. Controlled SEO experiments are the only method for establishing causal relationships between specific changes and ranking outcomes. For organisations investing significantly in SEO, experiments provide evidence for resource prioritisation: which changes (title tags, structured data, content depth) actually move the needle versus which are conventional wisdom without causal support. Google has published its own research on SEO experiment methodology and actively encourages the practice.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis does not run SEO experiments — it audits individual pages\' current technical state. It is complementary to experimentation: use DeepSEOAnalysis to audit the technical baseline of pages before running experiments (confirming structured data is correct, CrUX performance is measured, canonical configuration is clean) and to audit after experiments to confirm the intended technical change was correctly implemented.

Google Search Console Data
Data from Google Search Console — impressions, clicks, average position, and CTR by query and page — used to identify ranking opportunities (striking distance keywords), diagnose traffic changes, monitor indexing status, and measure the impact of SEO changes.

A Google Search Console property is a verified website or URL prefix registered in Google Search Console that grants access to performance data, indexing status, rich result reports, and crawl diagnostics for that specific domain or URL scope.
